No it is not painful.
Being nervous and tense is the worst part.
The nurse will have you take off your clothes and put on one of those lovely hospital gowns. My office gives a sheet to cover with. You lay back on the gyn table.
When the Dr. Comes in they will have you slide down and put your heels in the stirrups. The nurse will stay in with the Doctor during the exam. If a nurse is not there, ASK FOR ONE SO YOU FEEL MORE SECURE.
The Doctor will insert a thing that reminds me of an eyelash curler , it is called a speculum. It opens the vaginal canal so he can look thorough out the vaginal area and he will insert his gloved fingers to feel around to make sure there is nothing abnormal going on. He will take a small scrap of the cervix, that will go to the lab for testing.
When he is done he will have you sit up. My Doctor then standing to my side does a breast exam by checking the breasts one at a time for any lump or bumps or anything abnormal. Then you close your gown and he or she is done.
My Doctor then steps out you can get dressed and then come back in to talk to you about anything you need to discuss or he needs to share with you. When you are finished , he leaves , they give you a bill, you pay and leave.
Good Luck, just be calm, nerves makes it seem worse than it is.

When the dr is done examining the organs to make sure there are no abnormalities to the shape and size of them they will then take a special brush to scrape some of the cells from your cervix (they take it from the little opening in your cervix) to put on a slide and then send it off for analysis. This test is to screen for cervical infection.
There should be no pain with the pap smear but if there is it's because of one of the following:
1. being nervous (which is understandable so please try to stay relaxed)
2. Dr is too rough (you can ask them to stop)
3. Something wrong such as an infection
I had my pap smear hurt last week but that's because of something going on with my cervix right now. We think an infection.
You may notice some spotting after the pap smear for a couple days but this is normal. The reason it occurs is because of the irritation caused by the brush that's used.
If you still notice bleeding after a few days please make sure to let your dr know that it is still going on.
You should get the results back in about 2 weeks.

This link will answer all the questions you may have about a pap smear. Thing to remember during the exam is to relax and breathe deeply. It really shouldn't be a painful exam, the less tense your muscles are, the more comfortable you will be.

well, a pap is really simple. they bring you in and strap you on a table, dont be worried it is just to prevent the doctor from getting kicked from reflexes or touching a ticklish spot. then he puts a small, metal thing that they insert in your small flaps, that cover your vagina, to open it a little, so they can now clearly see inside, to your clitoris, and vaginal opening, then, he takes a large q tip swab and inserts it in your vagina and wipes it around to get bodily fluids, it might be slightly uncomfortable, but nothing too bad. then he takes it out, and puts that in a ziplock bag and sends it away to the lab to test for dieseses that could harm you, and for STDs and any infections. he closes your flaps, and pulls out the thing, and your done, walla. nothing really bad, the metal is a little cold, but you are more focused on a person sticking his nose where nothing but toilet paper should go. but, after a while you get used to it, the more you get to know your doctor, the more comfortable you feel when he does it. it can be embarassing, but look at the ceiling and think of something like bermuda or a good movie you have seen. all around, it is a little uncomfortable, but nothing that you will be like, screaming over, just a little cold, when he spreads your vagina open to see inside it is a little uncomfortable, but again, nothing bad, um, the swabbing just tickles, thats all. you really dont need to be scared or nervous, they will know that it is your first time and they will accomidate yu so, because thats what doctors do, they help you. i hope this helps.
