The great depression is the time between my alarm going off and me getting out of bed to get ready for work. Today it started at 6am and was triggered by my clock radio!

Hmmm! great depression? Hope you are not refering to someone being depressed?
Sorry. The Great Depression actually means different things to different people. In the midwest, it coincided with the dust bowl days, an extreme drought that caused dust drifts up to 30 feet deep, burying houses, cars, fields and all the rest. So, for those farmers, the dust bowl was the cause of the Great Depression.
For the U.S. as a whole, the Great Depression was caused by bank failure, which was caused by poor lending practices by the bank and failure of banks and other businesses to provide for the future.
