First of all, the newspaper is not the best place to look unless you live in an area where there's not a lot of opportunity. You can check out actorsaccess.com for commercials, TV & Film work. You can also see if your state has a film alliance. Sometimes they post audition information for projects filming locally. For theatre, you can go to backstage.com or http://www.actorsequity.org/castingcall/... If you find the audition on the Equity site, you still may be able to go, as long as their not taking appointments from equity actor's only :-) On backstage.com you have to pay to get all of the info, but the initial search is free and you may be able to see enough info to find out the rest on your own without paying.

You should also take acting classes and workshops and work on getting an agent. If you want to find a legitimate agent to represent you for commercials, TV & film go to Sag.org. Use the dropdown menu on the right labeled 'resources' and choose 'agent information'. On the next screen, on the left choose 'Find a SAG franchised agent' and follow the directions. You can look up agents all over the US, but there are higher concentrations where the work is (Los Angeles, NY, IL, FL, GA etc.)

Then you can send them your headshot, resume, and a cover letter stating that you are seeking representation and wait to see if they call you in for an interview.

Good luck!

Hi Ally,
Not all films and commercials are SAG or AG affiliated. Check with the University nearest you. There are many opportunies to act in student directed and produced plays, films, shorts, etc. Plus it's really good practice to audition and to act. Usually in or outside the greenrooms of university theatre departments, there are notices posted for auditions for student directed/produced plays and films. And many times your state's film commission will post all kinds of auditions on their website. Google "your state film commission." See what's there. There are so many actor workshops featured around the country too, in a city near you, I am sure. Take as many acting workshops as you can and hone your craft. In Texas, where I'm from, it's what is called a "right to work" state and there are many films and commercials that originate out of Texas and lots of opportunies to work in the acting field there without a SAG or AG affiliation. I had lots of modeling, commercial, and industrial film work there. I was always paid union wage without having to have a SAG or AG affiliation. There comes a point, however, when you are forced to join SAG or AG if you have more than a couple of speaking lines. And that's a great day and a great problem to have. Another great way to gain confidence and experience is to become involved in community theatre. It's a great practice stage for auditions and for acting. And remember, all these credits can go on a resume. There was a small radio station in the town where I went to college and I did all types of voiceovers for their commercials simply by volunteering to do so. I was not paid, however, I asked for a demo tape of my spot (which was a studio-produced copy) and I used every single spot I ever did on my resume. Pretty soon, I had a pretty good looking resume and got an agent. Remember, you never, ever pay an agent anything for representing you. They pay you. Remember that. Don't be hoodwinked by fakes. Only choose a reputable agent. When I was in college I was told by my professor, Jimmie Harrell, an old film actor, to read this book. Here's the link if you want to buy it. http://www.amazon.com/Acting-Television-Commercials-Fun-Profit/dp/0517884372
It's a fun, cartoonish book authored by a guy who was probably the most successful, highest paid commercial actor in the business (a few years ago now) at the time. I followed each and every step and got a good agent almost immediately.
As for auditioning tips for commercials. Here's the scoop. You don't have to know how to act for commericals. If you are the look they are looking for, you will get the job if you are halfway decent. If you google the seach term "auditioning tips" you will get a whole bunch of results. Read them. Something I used to do for commercial auditions is I memorized the first line and the last line of the side (script) and I would deliver that into the camera or to another person (depending on the circumstance). That way you don't have your head buried into the script the whole time. And you also need to learn how to read aloud without making mistakes and looking up as often as possible. Practice this. Many times you will not get a script beforehand so arrive early at your audition so you can prepare. Just make whatever you are doing REAL unless the part doesn't call for that. You will also do a slate before your audition. You usually state your name into the camera, state who your agent is if you have one, and do a right and left profile. Say your name at the end too. I always did. Be yourself. Have fun. Try different things. Practice in front of your friends or a mirror. Mainly have fun. It's fun.
Hope this helps you.

If you're referred to as for an audition you're going to generally receive what are referred to as "facets" or a couple of pages of a script that you're going to have got to learn on the audition. In theater you may additionally be required to have a few style of monologue equipped. The the very first thing to do is learn the script and get ready for the facet. Find out the whole thing you'll be able to approximately the man or woman you are going to be gambling. The strains don't seem to be main but. Just dedicate your recognition to the man or woman. How ancient, wherein from, how the man or woman feels approximately different characters within the tale. Only after you recognize the whole thing you have to understand approximately the man or woman do you begin finding out your strains. Use anything approach you suppose so much cozy with. You may not be required to understand the entire script on the audition however be ready. Before you pass to the audition, get dressed for the facet. Wear garments that are compatible the man or woman and the tale. If you are gambling a cowboy do not dress up in a trade go well with. You do not have got to pass out and hire spurs however put on garments that propose the position. Jeans and boots for this position will do first-class. Warm up for the audition similar to a glass warms up earlier than a ball recreation. Do a few stretches and vocal physical activities. Go over your strains. Don't pass in there bloodless. It's usual to be apprehensive however in getting ready your self you will not be as apprehensive and you'll be able to be in a position to chill out slightly. When you get to the audition, signal in. You would possibly have got to stay up for others to learn for the equal facet. Be sufferer. Avoid speaking with the opposite actors. They will most effective attempt to distract you. Focus on what you got here there to do. When truthfully studying for the casting director, be ready for some thing. Some would possibly take a seat and chat with you a couple of mins and others will simply get correct all the way down to trade. Forget that that is an audition. Do the efficiency as in case you had been truthfully within the creation. You most effective get one risk to make a primary impact. Make the director suppose that you just ARE the man or woman. They wish you to be the exceptional character for the position when you consider that that suggests their activity is accomplished. There are a few matters to not do while studying for the casting director. Don't suck up. A honest praise is first-class however a casting director will understand while you are simply grovelling. Aside from shaking his hand whilst you input, not ever contact the casting director. Finally, do not trash the workplace. Some hyperactive actors will truthfully do that within the warmth of appearing a bodily scene. This is a certain method NOT to get the facet. After you are performed together with your studying the director will assist you to understand while they will get again to you. Leave it at that. Don't make a scene. Just be legitimate and go away. If the casting director likes your efficiency you're going to be requested to come back again. At this time there shall be fewer folks auditioning and extra folks looking your efficiency. Maybe a few manufacturers, administrators and writers. Wear the equal garments that you just wore to the primary audition and positioned within the equal efficiency. Don't moment bet your self. If they referred to as you again then they favored what they noticed the primary time. Don't mess with luck. Keep files of every audition. Make notes of what matters you probably did and what you suppose you'll be able to do greater the following time. If some thing went very good, make an observation of what it was once. The extra auditions you do the greater you're going to get at them. Good Luck!
