No such thing really as a lower power state - the components draw electricity whether they're being used or not. Yes you can switch the screen off - this uses the most power.

If you are downloading your PC needs to be in the normal active state, but you certainly don't need to have the monitor switched on. So switch the monitor off and let he PC get on with downloading.

Yes you can turn the monitor off you can turn it off whenever but it is quite dangerous leaving your PC on overnight. On estimate there is a chance that a hacker will of hacked into your computer after all that is around 8 hours you have left it for. But if you are sownloading lots of files at one time what can you do?

As long as your pc is a desktop you can switch off the monitor but leave on the pc.

I turn off the monitor, but leave PC running as normal.

You can turn of the monitor but you need to make sure that your PC does not go in to hibernation mode any time in the evening otherwise what your downloading wont get installed.

You can underclock the processor, this would save power. You can also turn down the fan speeds and turn off any strip lights you have in your pc.

all you need running are the system box and modem/router. The screen, speakers, printer, scanner &c.&c can be switched off
