I'm here to tell ya, as sure as my name is Festus Hagen that Matthew's love life is no more exciting than mine is!! That surprises ya, doesn't it?? Well it shouldn't! I know you've all been hearing quite an ear full lately about Matthew's exploits with Miss Sunshine and about poor old Miss Kitty's tryin' to cope with the situation. Well......... You've only heard the half of it!!!
Matthew has actually become quite a legend around these parts! And you know that legends don't sleep! There's always someone lookin to get in the back door!! Hell, it ain't only Miss Kitty and Sunshine that want a piece of Matthew!
There's women from here to Oklahoma trying to git a piece of the action!! These women are so hot for Matthew they're ready to walk a crooked mile to get to him!
That's where I come in!! I offer them a shoulder to cry on, a little whiskey and some good conversation! Hell, they know the best way to get to Matthew is through me! When one thing leads to another.... well hey, something has to offset the long hours and short pay!! I tell ya again, Matt's love story is tame compared to the nooky I've been scorin' lately! I know you'd like all the gritty details and I'd love to give them to ya, but I'm not a man that likes to kiss and tell!
You want anymore than what I've told ya, you'll have to get from the "whispering tree", after all, I have promises to keep!

In the sitcom, Gunsmoke, Matt Dylan is the Sheriff of the town called Dodge. He is usally found at the bar with Miss Kitty. This brings to light Matt's love story. Through all the episodes I feel that Matt is falling for Miss Kitty, but is to busy to realize it. He has to walk or ride horseback down many crooked miles of roads to help others. He works long hours for short pay, as many sheriffs do. He is a legend to many people and as everyone knows, Legends don't sleep. He saved many people and is thought of and remembered through that. In one episode, called I have promises to keep, Matt shows what type of caring person he really is. So next time he sits with someone by the Wispering Tree, they know they can trust him. I think he is a great actor and in his episodes that shines through.
I hope this is what you meant. Sorry if it's not. I only catch some of the show whenever my Dad is watching it. Hope it works!!

Festus tells Matt, I have promises to keep, Even though I have to travel the long crooked mile, I will bring the gunman in for you. I work long hours for short pay,but I will do it. When Festus returns he finds Matt and Kitty under the whispering tree. I think they were telling love stories. Legends don't keep so I know some day it will come out about Matt;s love story. The whole town will know it.

"I have promises to keep," the whispering tree said to the traveler coming down the road. But the traveler was too consumed, thinking about his long hours and short pay, to hear the tree. Another one came down the crooked mile, holding a western novel called "Legends don't sleep." The tree once again tried to speak to the traveler, but was not heard. Later that day, a young girl came and sat under the tree for shade. "I have promises to keep," said the tree. The girl heard, looked up and said, "A talking tree. I would rather hear about Matt's love story, could you tell me that one?"
