I THINK I just herd that on the travel channel. It was just mentioned in passing and it stunned me. That would be a new one; would it not?

I believe he was Mary's uncle. That would make him Jesus's great uncle (on his mother's side of course).
I don't know how much of this you want to believe, but it does mention Great Uncle Joseph.

If memory serves, Joseph of Arimathaea was Jesus' gay uncle whom the entire family didn't like. However, he was Jesus favorite uncle so he emulated him in all his future dealings with the sheep errr I mean those who followed his stuff.
