Yes. I know this one cause that is what happened to my father. He was a WWII Vet, who died about 10 yrs. ago. We did not have the money for a propper head stone, so we got ahold of the VA and they made him a flat headstone out of marble, with all his credentials. It doesn't stand up, but it is nice to have there to honor him and to know where his grave is.

When a veteran dies and you wish for the vet to be buried in a National cemetery and have a headstone provided, you must show honorable discharge papers. You still have to pay for certain engraving fees, etc. To be honest, I'm not sure it's the VA that pays, I believe it's the government but it's been a while since I've hasd to deal with this situation. The stone will take a few weeks to be made and you don't have a lot of choices as far as design, but it is free except for any customization.

My uncle was in the navy, and he got one. Not sure of the way to do it though. It has his name date of birth, date of death, and the branch of the armed forces he was in and that it was during world war 2.
