Population is obviously effected by the number of births, number of deaths, immigration, and emigration.

With this in mind, I can think of several factors such as availability of medical care, desirability of location, general health of the economy in region.

If you're referring to population growth in lets say animals, such factors contributing to growth or decline would be the availability of food, number of predators, etc.

Exponential growth is math term meaning the larger the quantity gets, the faster it grows. So if a population is growing exponentially, the larger the population, the faster the population grows. Example-rabbits

There are two primary factors (or sets of factors) that affect population growth:

1) Sex
2) All the other factors

It is difficult to answer this question without knowing what type of population growth you are talking about, i.e., animals, plants, bacteria, viruses, etc.

When you get to human beings, there is a unique factor we do not share with non-human animals, plants, or other organisms: We can simply decide to limit population growth by abstaining from sex or managing births by using birth control measure. Some animals can defer births by stopping the development of embryos in response to unfavorable environmental conditions.

Other posters have and will identify some of the factors that affect population growth.

The best way to understand exponential growth is to think of a pair of mice (put aside the issue of inbreeding). The female gives birth to 10 offspring. Lets say the young are half male and half female. The offspring form five pairs and each female gives birth to 10 young and each of those young pair off and each female gives birth to 10 young.

That scenario is an example of exponential growth.

space, food, competition, predation, paratism.

exponential growth is when the population double with evry generation. Reprodction is happening at a maximum level.
