Indisputably, the United States won the Cold War. Rather than issue surrender terms to the disintegrating empire that quickly divested itself of its satellite countries, we lent them our expertise, and financially helped them with the transition to democracy. We extended a hand of friendship. We didn't taunt them about how we prevailed in the Cold War.

So, why are they still acting like the U.S. is their mortal enemy? The article below recounts how Putin is bragging his new ICBMs can't be stopped by U.S. technology. Why exactly does he need ICBMs? What legitimate reason could he have for these provocative actions? I know it sounds like heresy, but if Russia stopped its belligerant attitude, could it ever be considered for membership in NATO?

Its a reaction to what we're doing with regards to them.

Not many Americans are aware of this, but in the last years of Clinton's administration and all throughout Bush's, we've been starting a new arms race with China and Russia. We've been installing missile defence systems in Poland and the Czech Republic lately and Putin is right to be worried as hell. Our governments excuse is "its because of Iran", which is bullsh*t, and everyone knows it. We could have ONE Trident submarine in the Persian Gulf and completely level ALL of Iran and send them back to the Stone Age in minutes. These missile defence systems are being put in place as part of the arms race we're starting with Russia. We signed a pledge to begin to bring down our numbers of nukes, and we're not following up on it! We're actually EXPANDING our nuclear arsenal. We have so many nukes we could nuke everyone on the planet several times over! Putin and the Russians are worried as hell over all this! And understandably so!

The Bush administration in particular has an obsession with continuing a cold-war policy in a post-cold war world. It make no sense, and of course the Russians feel threatened! Its only logical!

Well, see, its like this:

Once the socialist have completely taken control of the US, then they will form a SuperNation with the other "democratic" Socialist nations on this side of the world.

Russia will form their own alliances, and be the head of their own SuperNation.

I don't really understand what they are thinking. Most of the people I know are hopeful for the Russian democracy . . .

What do you think?

It's called negotiation leverage.

The Russians are bent over (senselessly provocative) U.S. plans to deploy anti-missile systems in eastern Europe and to expand NATO into former Soviet Republics.

They need something to trade for concessions. The only thing Russia really has going for itself these days are nukes and oil.

(Oh, another thought is that we should be glad that Russian nuclear scientists are on the Russian payroll - the alternative is unthinkable)

Since the beginning of President Bush's term in office, the US launched an unprovoked war against a foreign nation and has promoted nuclear proliferation. We are building antimissile defenses in northern europe ostensibly to defend against launches from north africa and the middle east--none of whom have missiles with such range.

The only enemy with missiles a northern european shield would protect against is Russia. They are understandably irked we would violate the ABM treaty this way.

Apparently they've succumbed to the "We're becoming irrelevant" syndrome from which Iran and North Korea suffer.

Rule of thumb: When you want people to notice you, test a nuclear device.

I think they are getting ready for war against the Americans or the Chinese. Or it could just be Chechnya or terrorists.

No, the USSR should've won. They have better technology than us and even better culture. The only reason USA won was because of a poor leader named Gorbachev.
