In english, we're working on dante's inferno, and we need to make our own versions of hell. can anyone think of any 'sins' that relate to piano playing?

My piano teacher was a huge nut about posture and finger techniques. Like in scales, in music, it becomes necessary to switch fingers (ie. from your thumb to fourth finger) and for things to be played correctly, you must switch to the right finger or else it just doesn't flow or work.

Another one of her huge pet peeves were people that played with their wrists down (like almost resting on the piano) which limited just how much your hands could do. Other than that, oh definitely long fingernails were a no no.

Oh, and I almost forgot this one...yawning while playing piano! It looks terrible and is simply rude.

Some 'sins' for playing the piano would be...

1. Poor posture, your back slouched, wrists are down, shoulders tightened, elbows are tucked in.

2. Incorrect dynamics, trying to make the left hand the melody, keeping the right hand softer than the left.

3. Poor grooming and respect, uncombed hair, uncut fingernails, doesn't bow to audience before/after plays the piano, bows without self control.

4. Incorrect ways of playing, moving wrists, pushing on the keys not moving them, playing wrong notes, replaying a part of a song that was messed up, misuse of the sustain pedal to make songs sound horrible.

What a fun question! Piano recital hell!

over-pedalling would be the no. 1 sin.
also: incorrect fingering, playing with flat fingers, long fingernails, missing the leading tones (forgetting to sharp or natural the 7th of a key - very common), playing at the tempo of processing (playing the notes the minute you recognize them - not in rhythm), contorting the body, twisting the wrists, burying the melody under thick chords, playing too loudly and clunky, playing music that is too difficult (a sin of the teacher).

Very bad sin that most people attempting to play piano do: Playing the first 9 notes of Fur Elise, then stopping, saying "that's all I know, and plays it over 50 more times attempting to figure out the rest.

I have a hard time even walking past the piano without playing it. If I go on vacation I have to have a piano to play while I'm there.

Bad posture; long fingernails that make clicking sounds over the keys; pounding too hard(depends on the song); squeaky pedals(so annoying!!!!); and people badly playing overused songs like Ode to Joy, Fur Elise, and Heart and Soul.

Bad Posture... Incorrect Notes... Improper finger Location... Prolonging Staccatos... Playing on whatever mood...

You've already got a lot of good "piano sins." I'd say bad posture, pounding, and "Heart and Soul" are the three "Capital Sins" of piano playing! ;-)

long fingernails (they get caught between keys and rip)
slouching
crossing legs, ankles, wrapping legs around bench legs
flat fingers
slamming the pedals like a bass drum
sitting too close or too far away
scooting up and down instead of sitting in center
hanging palms over the edge of the keys

People who don't know how to play piano, who try Fur Elise... o.O
Yeah, I like the one about long fingernails
Or...hm... I heard you're not supposed to play black keys with your thumb...
Messing up famous songs really bugs me though.......
