I have a 160gb hard drive and 256mb ram what would be the best setting for my swap file?


In a few days I will have a total of 768mb of ram and still the 160gb hard drive, what would be the best setting for my swap file with this much ram?


BTW I already know that its best to keep the initial and maximum size set at the same size

There are quite a few opinion on this matter and there's really no best setting for everyone. The swap file size depends on how you use your PC and it's going to be different for everybody. Since you're already has lot of RAM, you can set your swap size to a smaller size like around 1 or 2 GB. That will give you plenty of room for any kind of activities (games, video editing,...). Try experiment with different size to see what work best for you. Unlike Win98, WinXP is pretty good about setting the swap file size.

with 256, set it to 640
with 768, set it to aroung 1750
