Like the last 2 people said - you can trade Pokémon between Emerald and Colosseum but in order to do so - you need the Nintendo GameCube Gameboy Link Cable. It plugs into the 2nd Controller Port. Once you get it, just go into Phenac City in Colosseum, go into the Pokémon Center and head downstairs.
The GBA game - the only condition is saving the game while you're in a Pokémon Center otherwise you don't need to know or do anything else other than trade. It'll act like regular trading so if you end up trading a Haunter - it will end up evolving into a Gengar.

OK... first off you have to beat Colosseum to trade with GBA. I know , It sucks. and once you do go to the poke center in the desert/spring town and you can trade in the basement. your Pokemon will not be affected by the trade at all. but you can not trade with shadow Pokemon on your team. Also I don't know about Emerald, but Ruby and Sapphire had a glitch that you could not grow berries after 100 hours of play. But thankfully connecting with Colosseum fixed the glitch.
