I was wondering, will there be sound when you shoot a gun in space? I always believed that space is silent...

There is no sound in space, since there is no atmosphere for sound waves to propagate through.

The space battle scenes in most science fiction movies are all wrong (when you hear sounds from phasers blasting, or ships exploding). It's very annoying.

Space is indeed silent. This is because, unlike light waves, sound waves require matter to travel. The relative lack of matter in space (space isn't actually completely empty, but the matter is usually well spread out) prevents sound from carrying.

Incidentally, this property of sound is the reason two cups or cans connected by a string or wire work as mock telephones for little kids.

We hear sound on earth because sound waves vibrate air molecules, that helps a sound wave travel.. In space, there are no molecules, nor matter ..therefore space is silent. Space is just empty space and time.. the gas, dust, ice from the stars are not dense enough for sound to be produced...but light waves can travel through space because it does not need an medium.

Interstellar space is not a perfect vacuum, so in theory there would be a compression wave, which is normally perceived as sound. However, the level would be totally undetectible as sound or otherwise.
Simply put, sound needs a medium to propogate, and space is essentially a vaccuum.

Sound will only travel through air not in space. If it is fired in space look out for the kick.

No.....sound is the transmission of a wave in a medium such as air or water. Space is empty and has no matter so there is no medium to transmit sound. Sound is a changing pressure wave.

i do not think a gun would even work in space because the bullet has to cumbust to shoot, and since space is a vacuum i don't know if that would work. but there would definitely be no sound. but laser sounds are NOT annoying, it would be more annoying to sit and watch a silent battle sequence.

Nope, sound requires a medium, of which is air. That is why you can sometimes not hear as clearly when hearing something at different air pressures, like when you go on a road trip to the mountains or something.

sound requires a material to vibrate through...so no sound in space.
