I believe Snape was in love with Lilly Potter. Maybe thats why Snape is so utterly mean to Harry ( I know that James was horrible to Snape b/c James and his friends bullied him) but maybe he is so mad at James because he married Lilly. Because Lilly always defended Snape even though Snape used to call her mudblood but maybe he had some feelings for her.

Do you think that they had a relationship? Cause remember that theres a woman that once loved Snape. Maybe it was her?

I think Snape did fall in love with Lily, but I don't think she fell in love with him. I think that they were friends in school, and that that's why she stood up for him to the Marauders... Maybe they were secret friends, and that's why he called her a Mudblood when she helped him.

I suppose she COULD have fallen in love with Severus, but I just don't think so. I think that if she was also in love with him, he wouldn't be quite so mean to Harry, because although he is James Potter's son, he is also Lily's son...

Or maybe they did go out and one reason Snape is so mean to Harry is because Harry's eyes remind him of Lily and he hates the pain it causes to be reminded of what he lost...

There is evidence in one of the books that Snape did have "a thing" for Lilly. Do you remember the story that Professor Lupin tells Harry about James Potter making fun of Snape and Lilly defended Snape?

I think the woman who loved Snape was his mother.

Lily defended Snape on one occasion, and even though they might have had an okay relationship in Potions (since Lily was a Potions expert according to Slughorn).

I think Snape has reason to hate Harry, because Harry gets to be the one to kill Voldemort, and not Snape himself. I think Snape regretted the death of the Potters because HE was the one who informed Voldemort of the prophecy... it was his fault that Lily and James died. If his mother was the only one who ever loved him, Snape would certainly feel a personal blow for causing a mother to die.

Snape has another chance to save a family from being broken apart... a mother comes to him, pleading for help. Snape takes the Unbreakable Vow with Narcissa Malfoy, even though Voldemort would most certainly be angry that his followers are ignoring his orders and taking it upon themselves to carry out their own plans. The Unbreakable Vow doesn't help anyone, except the begging mother, Narcissa Malfoy...

It is true, though that Snape continually insults James Potter without saying a single bad word about Lily Potter. He seems irritated when she is mentioned. There is a possibility of something there, but I think that Lily wouldn't have loved Snape... she is a kind person, but I don't think she had harbored feelings for him. If there was love there, it was most likely only on his side.

I keep hearing this theory and I sure do hope it's not true. I think Snape's just awful. One question for you: where does it say there was a woman who once loved Snape? I've never seen it, but I overlook minute details all the time.

From Jo when asked in a meet and greet aboubt Snape and if he has had love: "Yes, he has (been loved), which in some ways makes him more culpable even than Voldemort, who never has."

Maybe it is Lily, but I kinda doubt it. The good news is soon all questions will be answered.

Yeah. It was in one book that Harry saw one of Snape's memories. Snape was bullied by James, bu Lilly stood up for him. Snape kinda had a crush of her, but she only stood up for him out of pity. He kinda knew that, so that only made him hate both of them later.
