I'm talking in terms of other solar systems. The point being Earth not being in a position to actually communicate with other intelligent life on other planets. At the same time there must be planets out there that have already communicated because of lessor distances from each other. What are your thoughts?

I think that this is because in the eyes God, it was a really small distance. He probably plans for us to comunicate with other lifeforms (if there are any) someday. Everything will work out in the grand scheme of things!

To quote Yul Brenner as the King of Siam "I am not scientific person." Therefore, I will make up a story for children and
grownups. I think that when God created the Universe, he said to himself, before I populate all the planets with people I should really see how ,and if, once I give the inhabitants
"intelligence" they use this gift for good or evil. So, I will take a week or so to create Earth as a laboratory, and just on the chance that things are not going to work out as I would have liked, I will keep this planet away from all the others so as not to pollute them with evil things. Now, you can all look around and see what is going on on Earth and understand for yourselves why in the great scheme of things, Earth was placed far far away from other planets in the Universe..

It is not a question of distance but time, and communication ability. dolphins talk to each other, apes talk to each other why do not we talk with them? actually we are learning how to do that very thing, both of those species have been taught elements of our language and symbology to 'talk' with humans. So regardless if an alien species is sending out signals do we know what station to tune into on the galatic dial? Are we trying to listen with the right equipment? do we understand it is a language signal? An analogy would be having an anolog television set tuned to channel 12 trying to receive a digital signal broadcast on channel 53, distance is irrelavant if the equipment is not compatable and they are not tuned to the same frequency using a common language both parties understand. stars with planets are VERY close to earth in galatic terms, alpha centuri is on 4.24 light years away, that is REALLY close as far as distance is concerned in our galaxy and between galaxies. the andromedia galaxy, our closest galatic neighbor is 2 million light years away.

scheme. and we dont even know yet whether our closest neighbors, Alpha Centauri A, B and Proxima Centuari, have planets.

The nature of the trinary system makes it extremely difficult to detect them if they are there.

Planet-seeking is in its infancy still, with only 250 or so extrasolar planets discovered up to the present.

In all likelyhood, Alpha Centauri does have planets, and is only 4 light years away, really not that far in galactic terms. Our very first radio signals have now traveled about 71 light years from earth in all directions. Rough estimates is that there are 14,000-15,000 stars within 100 light years of earth. We by no means have mapped even a small portion of what is out there.

So i think that we have plenty of stars, with most likely plenty of planets, nearby to keep us busy :)

Edit: Yes, alpha centauri has been looked at...the nature of the three star (trinary) system makes it extremely difficult to detect planets near them using current methods...

We're not particularly far from other star systems. The average distance between stars in the galaxy is a few light years, and that's the distance to the nearest other stars from Earth.

But even those short distances are prohibitive as far as two-way communication is concerned, even if there were an intelligent civilization just one star over.

well, first earth is positioned in our solar system just right to evolve intelligence life.there has to be in other solar sytems and planets in other correct spots for intellgence life to send messages to us.so we are either to far down the their evloution scale compared to their superintelligence to get any notice or no one other intellgence evolved yet.that's why no messages have been heard yet.

Every thing is so far apart it is near impossible that we will ever communicate with another intelligent being.

we just have not been able to communicate yet or find faster ways to travel to other regions where there is life

When you see what we are doing to our planet would you want us as neighbours?
