I think it is the magic of angular force or torque.

T= r x F
r radius
F force applied to the top at r distance from its vertical axis

and also
T= I A
I - moment of inertia
A - angular acceleration

Torque is a vector that is normal to the axis of rotation ant that is keeping the top from falling down. Precess the phenomena what makes the top wobble.

A top is basically a gyroscope. Gyros exhibit a characteristic known as "Rigidity in Space." Any time a rigid metal disc is spun it has a tendency to remain in the same plane. You can read about it here......http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyroscope

It has a gyro effect and if it were to be spun at a rapid speed it would stay orientated in that line . The shuttle has 4 gyros to give them orientation in space.
