Rhetorical question-coz I think your answer is in your question.

A beautiful woman smiled at me today and didn't cost me a damn cent.

We are living in a Capitalistic society....

Having said that, I don't believe the best things in life are *really* free. If that were true without qualification, maybe we'd all choose to be homeless...I think there should be a qualification to your statement. And, that is, the best things in life can be free. But, only when you have *enough* money for needs CAN and WILL you be able to fully relish in ALL the wonderful moments that can be seen and had in this life. If the money you have doesn't meet basic needs, I believe you will mostly be consumed with survival and will often miss out on the beauties in life that others in more privileged financial situations may even take for granted...

If this sounds ridiculous to you, think about it this way: who is more likely to observe and feel joy upon seeing an intricate snowflake gently falling from the sky? Cold, hungry homeless guy or woman on a park bench clutching her shopping bags and sipping a hot latte??

Not trying to be a "downer" here...I found your question really interesting. And, so to avoid merely reiterating some the great info you have recieved thus far, I thought I'd just try and be contentious about it...hope you don't mind :-) :-).

Be greatful that the BEST things in life are free. Because it won't last. Not with these gas prices. Keep raising the gas cost and you'll be left with all the stuff you don't want to do that's free...and you'll do it cause you can't afford anything else.

EVERYTHING has a cost. If you think about it even the Best things in life aren't free. for example love, to love you have to give up certain things in order to have it, like time and effort. Other things cost but we give up money in exchange. I actually don't mind, because would you really want to buy love with money?

Because the best things in life are not concrete objects, they are moments. Everything else has a monetary cost because you can purchase them. You can't purchase moments, they just happen.

“You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don't make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can't take their eyes off you.” ~ Maya Angelou, American Poet, born 1928

because if it didn't then life as we know it would collapse. There would be no currency and people would resort back to very provincial ways of trading.
