My sister is 5, turning 6 in December. I'm worried that she can't read. She knows the sound of the letters but she will take a long time to pronounce a word. Should she be able to read well by now?

Don't worry about it. she need to learn at age 6, but some kids have trouble sometimes. just limit tv time and read to her.

I was 4 when I learned how to read. At 2 I could say my abc's.
but in college I did so bad. my sister learned how to read at 6 and a half. and she graduated from college with honors and as a scholarship recipient, she's been acepted into grad school with a teaching assistanship.
and I can't get into grad school.
she'll do better over time if she applies herself

We raised 8, one could read at the HS level when she was 5 ... that one gave us the hardest time & eventually did no better than other children in school due to professing boredom all the time. We have a boy, now 10, that had a hard time reading & really didn't read well until he was 7 or 8.
Strangely the children that read more quickly had a harder time understanding math... or maybe just had their head stuck in a novel when math was being explained.
Because some of our children were adopted, we got a big range of natural abilities to work with & all had different natural abilities. The best thing you can do as an older sister is read stories to her, because you are her natural idol & she will want to do as you do.

I did not start studying till the age of 7 and 6 years in a while 9/11/07, sure I swear to God that's my real Birthday. I am 12 years historical and i've received a 12th grade studying degree, but a 8th grade spelling level. So in my conception the earlier, up until age 9 when you consider that definitely in case your sister can't learn at age 9 she'll be illiterate, the simpler.

i did no longer initiate examining until the age of 7 and 6 years in a protracted time 9/11/07, particular I swear to God that's my genuine Birthday. i'm 12 years previous and that i've got have been given a twelfth grade examining point, yet a eighth grade spelling point. So in my concept the in the past, up until age 9 by using fact maximum probable in the experience that your sister can not examine at age 9 she'll be illiterate, the extra effectual.

No, she is doing ok if she knows some of the letter sounds.

When I was in school many many many years ago 5 year old was kindergarten , and the started teaching you there and in first grade.

now many parents teach them so they can read simple things before they start school.

My son is 5 turning 6 this month. He can read a lot of words that are simple and knows a lot by sight but more complex words are pretty much beyond his grasp.

She should know basic words at least before she starts school. But it's no big deal if she read sheakespeare, I know alot of 14 year olds who read worse than my 7 year old cousin. Teach her the basics now and don't push her or else she'll be deterred from reading. Trust me this way before second grade she'll be ahead of the game. ; )

You're a sweetheart to be concerned for her. You could help her by getting some of those toddler books and reading them to her, one word at a time. Just point your finger at the word and show her how to sound it out.

Well, she seems smart to me. I'm blonde, so I didn't learn to read until I was 5 1/2. Just practice with her or have an older cousin or sibling help. Happy teaching!!
