(I have read all of Stephen King's books -- even those under the name Richard Bachman -- and most of Anne Rice's too.) So other than the stories by these two authors, what is a really good scary story?
I don't want one that is just some schuck running amuck with a knife that's all gore. I mean something really scary, supernatural scary.

You've all been very helpful, so I can't pick. I'll let the voters decide. I plan to print out the entire list of everyone's suggestions and give them all a try. It seems that most of you like Dean Koontz, so I'll start there. Thanks to you all!

I'd start with Peter Straub. He co-wrote the Talisman and Black House with Stephen King, their styles are similar although I think Straub is the superior writer. I loved Mr. X and Ghost Story. I'd avoid Lost Boy Lost Girl and In The Night Room although both are award winning.
Straub has a wonderful command of language that really makes his good books very good.
Dean Koontz's Odd Thomas is really a pleasure to read. The sequels are far less worthwhile but if you've read Odd Thomas you'll be invested enough in the characters to want to read them. I thought that the other Dean Koontz books I read lacked plot detail and imagination.

If you've read the Bachman books and most of Anne Rice, then you'd probably like Koontz, Barker...
Did you know V.C. Andrews is categorized as horror? Perhaps they think all the incest is horrifying...
