I took three and that made me exempt from taking any language when I went to college. Each state/college has different standards though.

It really depends on the university, so you'll have to check with each university to see what the requirements are. For the most part, most universities require 2 years.

However, some private university do not require a foriegn language at all because they require the student to take a foriegn language at the university.

As I said before, check with each university that you are interested to see their requirements. Taking numerous years of a foreign language will not hurt you and if you continue and take 3 years of the language, then you will not have to worry about requirements because you fulfilled the requirement for whatever university that you decide to apply (3 years, 2 years, 1 year or 0 years).

Most colleges want at least 2 years of the same language. The more, the better.

It looks a lot better if you take 3+ years, most prefer it, but it depends on where you want to go I suppose.
