AVG and Avast has free ones.

There are more free antivirus programs out there.

You also need a firewall.

ZoneAlarm has a free one.

Disable Windows firewall if it’s not disabled automatically.

Also have some spyware/adware removers like Ad Aware SE Personal and Spybot-S&D.

Note: Have only one antivirus program and one firewall installed on you computer.

Adware/spyware removers are ok to have more of.

Best if you download antivirus, and save to Desktop etc.

Then you will need to remove, the older security software you had already ??.

Disable the modem for a few minutes, until you are sure the new software is installed correctly ..etc.

Find out which Anti-Virus tool you want to use. A Free one or a home/small business version which cost you money.

See if they have a free online virus checker so you can use it to scan and fix problems first. You can do this at some while you are at their Web site.

Trendmicro's housecall an online scanner is free to use, but their anti-virus suite with a firewall tools cost money.
Avast has a free scanning software device too. And a Free to home users anti-virus package.
AVG also has a Free anti-virus package, but as to whether they have an online scanning tool I am not sure.
