I am gay, and to be totally honest both sides of this debate is fueled by common bigotry and hatred. Every gay person insists that they are born gay. Every straight person says it is a choice. Your personal answer (and your personal bigotry) depends on your orientation. There is scientific evidence that points both toward and against people being born gay. The average person takes about 12 years to develop a sexual attraction for another person. In that timespan there are many physical things that can effect you such as physical growth, injuries, sickness, excellent or bad nutrition, etc and many emotional things that can effect you such as relationships, traumas, abuse, positive nurturing, etc. The combination of those factors is what shapes a persons personality and turns them into the adult that they will become. There is a religious population out there, I call them "Religi-Nazi's" who refuse to acept the notion that a person is born gay and they hate anyone who believes that. There are also many gay people who refuse to accept the notion that you have a choice in your lifestyle and they hate anyone who believe that and that makes them hateful and bitter and no better than the Religi-nazis. HATE IS HATE!!! It doesnt matter what direction it comes. The reality is that a persons physical characteristics, social skills, health, emotional well-being AND "sexual preference" comes from a combination of genetic blueprint and their experiences in life, also know as "nature vs. nurture". It is a combination of the two that determines sexual orientation and a combination of birth and choice.

I hope you realise that those aren't the only two options!
I think we can safely reject the hypothesis that people choose to be gay. There may be some element of choice involved (such as accepting one's attraction to members of the same sex), but it seems inherently unlikely that you can choose who you find attractive.
The other options are: that sexuality is genetic; that it isn't genetic, but is decided in the womb, and so has something to do with hormones; or that it's down to environmental factors, such as early experiences. The scientific evidence is somewhat ambiguous. As sexuality is such a complex thing, my gut instinct is that it's formed by a combination of all those factors.

Evidence in the natural world, as well as recent findings in the scientific community pretty much show that people are born gay or straight. Of course that information will not sway anyone that wishes to not understand, and it certainly will not prevent this question showing up on here repeatedly.

Born gay.
Scientific researchers have shown that being gay is based on biological and genetic factors.
Even the ultra conservative president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary has said that scientific research "points to some level of biological causation" for homosexuality & "I am absolutely confident that a large number of homosexuals are telling the truth when they say they did not choose that orientation."
An October 2004 scientific research publication stated that scientists at the University of Padua have found that women tend to have more children when they inherit the same genetic factors linked to homosexuality in men. This fertility boost more than compensates for the lack of offspring fathered by gay men, and keeps the “gay” genetic factors in circulation.
Another study published in Human Genetics in February 2006 examined X chromosome inactivation in mothers of gay sons and mothers whose sons were not gay. Researchers found extreme differences between women who had gay sons and women who did not.
A Canadian university study published in June of 2006 stated that, although researchers have known for years that a man's likelihood of being gay rises with the number of older biological brothers, that the new study found that the so-called "fraternal birth order effect" persists even if gay men were raised away from their biological families.

I believe that people are born gay. It is not their choice, they cannot become straight just because they want to. It's either living a life of lies and loneliness, or living YOUR life the way you really are.

I think many would say they were born gay, but there is no difference in there DNA, I find it funnest when religious people claim that homosexuality is a choice and use science to prove it, when science is trying to disprove God (In a way)

When you wrote this question, didn't you notice that Yahoo listed a hundred similar questions?
Why would you believe that anyone would choose to be gay?

Abetterfate,
You weren't born gay. No one was. You were born into a sinful world and just happened to have homosexual DESIRES...much like someone who has a desire to steal. You didn't choose to have the desire, but you did choose to have sex with a woman...the same way a thief chooses to steal and give into their desires. What does that mean? It makes being gay YOUR choice. To answer the question properly...God doesn't make MISTAKES...people are not born gay...they choose to be gay. There is not one gay person on here who cannot say that they came to a point in their life when they had to choose whether to have sex with someone of the same gender or turn away from it. The people who claim to be homosexual are just people who had those desires who gave into them despite what God said.
