I'm trying to find the mass of acetice acid in vinegar.
Here is the information given:
Mass of vinegar: 8g
Volume of vinegar: 10mL
Volume of NaOH: 22.8mL
Concentration of NaOH: 1mol/L
NaOH + HC2H3O2 --> NaC2H3O2 + H2O

How do you arrive at the answer?

OK...You used 22.8 mL of NaOH to neutralize the acetic acid in 10 mL of vinegar.

Since you know the concentration of NaOH in its solution, you can calculate the moles of NaOH used:

22.8 mL (1 L/1000 mL) (1 mol/L) = 0.0228 moles NaOH

Since the equation shows a 1:1 ratio of NaOH to acetic acid, the vinegar solution contained 0.0228 moles of acetic acid in 10 mL (0.01 L).

To find the mass of the acetic acid, just use its molar mass (32 g/mol) to convert the 0.0228 moles into grams:

0.0228 mol ( 60 g/mol) = 1.37 grams acetic acid.

The information from NaOH will tell you the number of moles of acetic acid you actually have.

1) Calculate the number of moles of acetic acid
1 mol/L x 1L/1000mL x 22.8mL

2) Use the balanced chemical equation to determine the mole ratio of NaOH:HC2H3O2 (this is as simple as comparing the coefficients).

3) Use your mole ratio to determine the number of moles of acetic acid that are actually present in your solution.

4) Multiply the number of moles of acetic acid times the molar mass...voila...you're done.

The additional information of volume of vinegar can be used to determine molarity.
The additional information of mass of vinegar can be used to determine the % by mass concentration.
Neither of these two pieces of information is necessary to determine just the mass of acetic acid.

In principle the volume of titrant tells you how many moles of HOAc you had. Everything else is obvious.
