Yes, I have this setup at my house and it is really great. Even better, I can access the external hard drive from every computer in the house.

I have a wireless router to network all the PCs in the house to the internet. Some are connected with an Ethernet cable (desk top is hardwired) and others are wireless (like the laptop) to this Linksys "WiFi G" WRT54G wireless router.

Then conected to the router is this little gem - a Linksys Network Storage adapter that allows you to plug in any USB external hard drive:

LINKSYS NSLU2 Network Storage Link for USB2.0 Disk Drives

You can set it up with a password to protect access to your data and it is very easy to set up. Best of all, you can back up any computer in the house to it or use any computer to access any of the data stored there. Very nice - I have all my music there and any computer can now play any song.

Good Luck

Make Hard Drive Wireless

Only possible as attachments to a network storage and the network happens to be a Wi-Fi network as described above, but anything like local wireless USB doesn't exist for drives yet, Bluetooth is way too slow for this purpose, high speed Bluetooth is still at the drawing board.

I don't know about directly, but I have a wireless network that allows a laptop to access the hard-drives of another computer (both internal and external). I'm using Apples, so it's dead easy.

You could buy a network hard drive and plug it into your home hub, that should work, then any computer connected to your home hub will be able to use the hard drive. Not anyone on the internet. Heres a 500gb network hard drive for £79.85 on amazon. Plus free deilver.
