i got a letter months ago that said all i had to do was send money to the people on the list, just 1 dollar. then you copy the letter and replace one of the names with yours and you send out so many letters.

It's a chain letter. It's illegal in most places and stupid everywhere.

It became a Federal felony in 1935, during the Send-A-Dime scandal of that year.

Also look up the names Dave Rhodes and Karen Liddell, for some direct examples of folks whose chain letters are infamous online.

Pyramid scam, plain and simple. It may not be mail fraud because you are only dealing with increments of one dollar, but it is still a scam.

It's called a Ponzi Scheme, and yes, they're illegal.

So to get your name off that list and avoid potential litigation, please send me and my 9 associates $1.00 each.
