Marriage predates modern religion by several thousand years. The whole argument that marriage is a "sacred right" and it's intended purpose is to spawn children is so far from the original purpose of marriage it's really quite comical. Marriage was originally used as a means for 2 tribes to consolidate wealth, land and to build good will between them. It would not be until many years later that any form of religion would step in and declare the whole process "holy". I do not doubt that for followers of religion marriage is indeed a special occasion and deeply spiritual, good for them. But what people need to understand is that today marriage is first and foremost a legal contract, any religious or spiritual significance is in the eye of the beholder. Every religion treats marriage rights and ceremonies differently. Christians are monogamous where as many Muslims are polygamous, but by and large both are accepted as parts of their culture. Why then is it not legal for same sex partners? The answer is that modern religions consider homosexuality sinful and given that most people have the idea that marriage is all about religion it comes down to people imposing their "moral" views on others. Divorce rates are at an all time high yet the "moral majority" has the nerve to say gay marriage will be the end of civilization! I say if 2 fudge packers want to be married let them! They can't do a worse job then we straights are doing with it.

The fight for gay marriage isn't to create a "pro" or positive result... it's to erase a negative (or con) that is built into our society.

That negative thing is that there is an entire population of people who want to get married, but are not allowed.

Gay marriage would not create a positive change... it would take away a negative rule.
