The Panama Canal was formally opened on August 15th, 1914.

The First World War is accepted to have started when Austria-Hungary issued a declaration of war on 28th July, 1914.

So WW1 predates the opening of the Panama Canal by 18 days.

It depends on how you look at it and when you mark the beginning of both events. The first ocean going ship through the canal was January 7th, 1914, but the official opening was on August 15.

Some would say the WW1 started with the assignation of Archduke Franz Ferdinand June 28,1914. Others with Germany's declaration of war against Russia on August 1st. You could probably argue either way but I'd say the canal was completed first.
