Since liberals and conservatives view the world from opposite ends what then do we teach the kids .
They learn from watching us that fighting ,killing ,divorce and ignoring the problems of others is common .
That justice and morales change every few decades and the future is uncertain .
That war not peace will be around for a long time and that Jobs and money define who you are .
SO do you want your kid to grow up and make bombs ,practice law and join the police department and make his living off the misery there seems to be plenty of .
or
Make some major changes rather then Continue as before year after year .

How can we teach anything except evolution . That religion should be taught like we do the Greek Gods as legend and mythology .That when your kid asks the hard question where do we come from you say science still does not have a definite answer . About 15 billion years ago an event occured as best we can determine .

I agree with much of what you are saying, and am unpleasantly appalled by some of the answers you've received thus far.

Being a parent I find it irresponsible for any member of this society to not care about another child's education, or another citizens' well-being. Do they think that only their children will serve, advise, care for, protect and live along side them? Until people take a vested interest in their community, they will forever be doomed to rot in it.

You can still be part of a collectivist society and have individual goals.

A huge problem is that Americans are becoming lazy; we don't embrace changes in science in technology (but prefer to reap the benefits in our own selfish greed) and the progress of the rest of the world, so we don't have children who grow to become pioneers in this field. Companies outsource or hire foreign workers in science and engineering because there ARE NO Americans skilled enough to do these jobs.

I wonder if any Republican or conservative can tell me what building a bridge or purifying drinking water has to do with kids being taught religion? If you don't believe in taking care of anyone but yourself and your family, I hope you never have to work in a building built by an architect who had a sub-standard education.

How awful for people to only care about their children growing up to be carbon copies of themselves with no ability to think, reason or act, based on conditions that exist in their world, or worse, to lack compassion for their own neighbors.

Before we "indoctrinate" our children, let's just try to see that they get a good education. That means math and science skills, language skills, geography and civics. Lets rear them to think for themselves. All children have a right to a good education, yet we are failing them right and left. Anywhere from 20 to 40% (depending on where they live in the US) aren't even graduating from high school. They are totally unprepared for life in the 21st century.

Religion should not be taught in public school. If you want your child to receive a religious education, send them to a parochial school. Evolution should be taught, because that is the way we all came to be. I saw on the news today that some crazy fundamentalists have built a museum diorama that "proves" early man co-existed with dinosaurs. That is wrong to teach our children when science bears out that this is not true. This kind of crap just further confuses children. Most of all we shouldn't make a battlefield of our children. Let's argue about something else.

Wow! You certainly cover a lot of territory. It is strange that the liberal Supreme Court demands that religion not be taught in public schools, yet they teach all sorts of religion in the form of fables, legend and mythology. They teach murder (abortion), so you can't expect people to quit killing each other, either on the streets or domestic violence. Schools teach Darwinism, a religion of its own. They teach Communism, another religion.
Yes, the future is in the hands of the children: most of them have nothing to build a future upon. Most of them don't know their own past (nation's or their own as individuals).
You can't worry about everyone: worry about your own and hope that others will do the same.

I raised my children with standard values that all people should believe in, the basics. I exposed them to religion and discussed things like the theory of evolution. I did not force anything on them. I felt they were intelligent enough to form their own opinion and decide what it is they wish to follow. if they did anything I considered wrong I punished them and explained what I felt was wrong and what the correct thing to do would have been.
they both turned out pretty good, my 24 year old daughter is on the liberal side, single mom with a job but lives with her mom.
my 20 year old son is very conservative in most aspects and has just completed his 2nd year in college.
neither of them has ever been in trouble and neither of them received any "indoctrination", just plain old parenting. they both are different and although they were of course exposed to my ex-wife and myself, they chose their own directions.

I cannot agree to those terms...I cannot agree to completely discredit the beliefs of millions of people so we can all go out on a sleep over and sing campfire songs...I do not agree that libs and cons see things from opposite ends rather than from a different point of view...we all want a better America, we just can't agree on how best to proceed.
You are further dividing Americans with this nonsense.

They also learn from us loving, helping, sharing, caring, being just, being moral.

All these things, plus all those you mentioned, as Ecclesiastes sings, are a part of life.

Evolution? We can't teach that solely while there are such solid rebuttals to it, such as the lack of *any* evidence of it in the fossil record, and the contradiction with the second law of thermodynamics. So rather than your thought, we ought to admit it is a theory, as yet not proven.

you got this all wrong I have 3 adult kid's and when they were growing up we did not teach them any of what you are talking about, of course I am coming from a different place I am a child of WW2 and we grew up totally different than now but we taught are kids to be honest, kind not to lie and obey your alders and respect them also, to work hard for what you want in life and so on, and they all have made us proud because they are great adults and care about others and life.

You are all over the place with this one, but let me start with "How can we teach anything except evolution?"

Simple. Whether you agree with it or not, this country was founded based on Christian principles. Our laws, mores, etc come to us, at least in part, on the ideas in the Bible. It is my opinion that each student should be familiar with the Bible, just merely for educational purposes. I believe it is the most widely read book in history and the moral codes it sets up (Thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, etc) are prevalent throughout our society.

Should the Bible be confused with science? I would say not. I think that science is an area of hypothesis and research. As a matter of science, the Bible is not science. If there are some out there who are compelled to believe in Intelligent Design, that is a philosophical question and not a scientific one. Let the humanities discuss it, and let the sciences teach science.

I say since children are our future, lets fix this cesspool we call government education. It is a farce. We should have a voucher program and let the schools compete. Anyone that sends their children to a public government school is guilt of child abuse.
