I believe he saw them as a necessary evil.The communists had them are were willing to use them so we had to have them too.President Kennedy stood up to the communists in 1963 and for that we should all be grateful.He was a great President.

He had them and loved them, as long as it was all one sided in his favour. (ring any bells?) When the Russians started to put medium range missile in Cuba he got a bit jittery and got a lot of mercenaries to attack the bay of pigs. (As one participant told me, they said they were rag tags who couldn't fight - but they forgot to tell them that they were!!)
In the end it wasn't a nuclear weapon that he needed to worry about!!

He came very close to using them. I don't think he wanted to get rid of them, unless they were near us and not our own.
