No. Any program worth anything is being handled by the free market.

I believe some programs are worth having. Such as social security, Veterns Affairs, and medicare, but many of the programs run by the government are so full of fraud and mismanaged. The end result is that the government spends 3 or 4 times as much tax money on a program because of the way a government works.
No aspect of government is efficient. Just look at how Washington DC works. They are trying to do this "comprehensive immigration" reform and it is a joke. Why can't we focus on enforcement of our current laws before we start another program with X Y and Z visas.
From other posts, you said you work as a social worker. So you see 1st hand how things work. I worked for the city where I live in college. If you made a suggestion to improve things, you were told by your superiors to be quiet because this is how something works.
The government has enough problems trying run what it currently has in place, something like a universal healthcare will cause total chaos.

Great question!! How about spending money on our crumbling infrastructure, or helping people who cannot afford medical insurance. (My colonscopy was $500 WITH insurance)? Maybe we should think about preventative health care and help the poor with mammograms and other tests that will save us money in the future. Hey--and how about checking the cargo that comes into the U.S. on ships? Only 20% is checked. What about the border fence? Did anyone check to see how few people actually enter the U.S. illegally on foot before spending all that money? Forty percent enter by bus or plane and the vast majority of the rest cross on day passes and don't return. The few that sneak across the Sonoran Desert or the mountains of southern New Mexico is minuscule. Sustainable energy? More money for less oil dependency? But you should ignore my ideas. I'm registered Independent. I cannot believe people think there are no programs except defense worth spending money on. No National Parks? No National Forests? Kill all the wildlife? Yeah, free enterprize will really take care of that. No quality health care for veterans? No postal service? No police and fire protection? No prosecuting attorneys? No Judges? No government employees? I can't believe someone thinks defense is the only program we should spend money on. No museums? Amazing and so sad.

There are a few. But the problem is that people get involved and self-interests take precedence rather than the attitude of good-for-all. So it's best that the programs are very limited.

I think the Federal government has some responsiblity to protect the citizens, but has gone way overboard and is now in control of nearly every aspect of our lives. I can't think of anything new that we should pay for by taking money out of the pockets of those who earn it.
The people most in favor of government programs are those who pay little to fund them and stand to benefit from the hand-out.

Women Infants and Children (WIC) provides vouchers for baby formula, cereal, milk, cheese and some other food only for those who qualify, I'm not sure of the qualifications. But its for lower income families.

7) A basic safety net that covers the needs of those who cannot work, and temporarily covers those who are displaced
A VERY few more, but you get the point.

the only program is defense that is worth paying for. if you read the Constitution it states that federal government should take care of money trade and defense not the nickel and dime programs that we have now that the founding fathers fought so hard against when they fought with great Britain. our founding fathers must be rolling in their graves.

military/national security
infrastructure (roads & highways)
education- including higher education and skills training
social security (but only for those disabled that can't provide for themselves not a means for retirement)
Nothing else I can think of right now our gov't should be spending money on. The people should have the responsibility to take care of the rest.

Roads, water and sewage, law enforcement, prison system, just to name a few. Government should provide infrastructure and enforcement of laws passed. And what can be contracted out should be.
