The publisher is being a lazy SOB...

That being said, most publishers prefer a manuscript to be written in MS Word or Word Perfect. That way they can edit it and format it. As a word processor, wordpad sucks...if you can, buy one or the other of Word or WP.

Print-out a copy of the entire manuscript, and mail it to yourself...the "poor-man's copyright." Once you receive the canceled parcel in the mail, shop around to different publishers (send a hard copy *and* electronic copy - on a CD-R) and see what they say. If you're looking to be paid for outright the book (i.e.: you're selling the rights to them), expect alot of form letters that translate to "Sorry, not interested."
If you are willing to front the cash to print a couple hundred copies and do the distribution yourself, that'll likely be a couple thousand dollars for printing and shipping costs from an independant publisher.

Either way...good luck!

Download OpenOffice.org. It is free and contains a word processor that will create PDF files.
