I have accepted a job with the enemy of my current employer - whom I previously worked for. This past employer and I have thoroughly discussed all the issues we had between us as a result of my leaving his employ and going with my current employer. I am so afraid to tell my current employer that I am leaving to go back to my former boss....He can become very angry and I know that all the hard work I've done, and all the praise he has given me up to this point will mean nothing once I tell him. Does anyone have any suggestions for the most tactful way and the kindest way to handle this? I am several years older than my present boss. We don't have a bad relationship - just not a lot in common. I know he is very pleased to have me working for him and will never be convinced that this is not a mistake. The new position represents an increase in pay and a few other pluses- otherwise, the jobs are comparable. Thanks.

Honesty is the best policy. You get with him for a talk (preferably not during a time he is rushed or stressed). You thank him for the opportunity to have worked under him, but you have been made a very good offer. Then LISTEN to him (even if he gets mad). You politely say I would really prefer not to end our work relationship in this manner and I appreciate your concern for my future. However, I feel like this is something I need to do. Again, thank you for the opportunity, I am confident you will find someone quite capable of fulfilling your need. (Hopefully you're giving him 2 weeks notice that is the only curteous thing to do. WRITE YOUR RESIGNATION LETTER PRIOR to seeing him. Document document and hand it to him. That way if he "fires" you, you have something on which to fall back)

I would leave on the best note possible. When giving him your reasons for leaving, stress the positives of the new position rather than the negatives of your current position. I would give him at least two weeks notice. Make sure to thank him for the opportunity and wish him luck in the future. That's all you can do. If he gets angry that's his problem.

There is no easy answer. Your current boss will question if you ever really had loyalty to him, and rightly so. Just be honest, put in your two weeks notice and see how it goes. Chances are your current employer will not want you to stay the 2 weeks. If he gives you attitude, then respectfully remind him that you are not going to put up with it.

Put your resignation it in writing and hand it to your boss. I've done this.
You are not obligated to tell your current boss who your new employer is, so don't sweat it. Just make sure you leave on a positive note and then off you go!

i was in this situation.
When I accepted the new job, I told them my boss woul'd probably fly off the handle when I gave him the news.
I tendered my two weeks' notice, and, you guessed it, my boss started giving me a lot of crap. I told my boss i would stay the two weeks,. but if he was going to give me a line of BS, I would leave, immediately.
At the new job, they asked, and I told, howI handled it. We all had a good laugh.
Sp, sc%%% your boss. If he wants to act like an idiot, just tell him you're done, NOW!
You'd prefer notto, but that's up to him.
Good luck.

If you can, give a written two week notice. If he gets angry, big deal. If you fear for your life, perhaps have someone mediate your sit down (your bosses boss perhaps?)

You ultimately have to look out for your happiness and your pocket.
