Petticoat punishment mean to put a boy in girls clothes as a punishment for bad behavior. Usually for being rude or disrespectful to a girl, or for bullying her. I was told this was common in England and in the USA many years ago and that today some mothers still use it, and think it's very effective. The intensity of the petticoating depends on the crime. Sometimes the boy has to wear only a feminine apron. When the offense is worse, his mom may make him wear full girls clothes, including bra and panties. I'm asking this because a friend of mine told me her mom is giving petticoat punishment to her 13 yo bro, because he was mean and disrespectful to her. At home the boy has to wear girls clotes, dressses, skirts, even bra and panties. I don't know if this is true. Anyway, is this legal? Can a mom make her son wear girls clothes regularly, on the street and to school? Or can she take him to a lingerie store to get a bra fit, for example? I guess this is illegal.

Interesting note:

There are actually a lot of what we call "blue laws" and loopholes that exist in many states from over a hundred years ago. Massachusetts and Rhode Island are actually well known for the amount of small hidden back laws that they have.

Most of these laws make certain things very legal, but are not necessarily practical to today's times.

Back to topic:

I have never personally* heard of anything like this being 'illegal' in the states. I can see; however, how it could possibly cause psychological problems with the child depending on usage. It may cause identity confusion, and mental anguish to a high degree if used improperly.

This would fall into the same category as some of Jane Elliot's experiments with racism in my opinion. She was the school teacher that divided the children up according to eye-color in order to teach them how racism happens. These experiments worked very well in getting the children to understand both points of views on the topic.

I wouldn't necessarily make the boy wear women's clothing personally, I think there's a better way of handling the problem but to each their own.

The closest I came to this was being made to wear a flouncy pinafore style white nylon apron at my aunt's house. She took a delight in doing it up in a big bow at the back and teased me for looking so pretty.

Not sure but it probably could make the boy interested in wearing womens clothing all the time. I would say that it is not healthy. Find another punishment.

I doubt it's illegal, but it sounds highly immoral.
