we drive by all the time and wonder if there is some specific reason they do that

It is a cheap and extremely effect way to keep coyotes away from the sheep, more so than a dog even.

Around here they use llamas and they work even better. Unlike dogs they can keep the donkey/llama with the sheep 24-7, they take almost no care and coyotes know to stay away when they see one.

to stop it from running away ,maybe they only got one corral
or maybe they only bring food to one place ,
all herbivore4s can sleep or hang out together
or be in the same field .
Like horses,ostrich,cows ,donkey´s,antilopes ,the only ones that give problems,like with the antilope for example, is if there is more than one adult male ,because they will fight

Donkeys scare off coyotes and other preditors and the will trample snakes...as passive as they can look they are really powerful.

perhaps they don't want to kill it or leave it to die - so they keep it in.
