The first mention of anything like football comes from China in the 2nd and 3rd century BC. A military training exercise involved kicking a ball through a target, whilst being attacked by opponents. Something similar also existed in Japan. The first game of this type was played in ancient Greece and Rome, but this was really more like violent dodgeball.

Soccer was a popular game played by the British Forces since the late 1880's I don't know as it was classed as military training, it was classed as P, T. (Physical Training to build up stamina).

I don't think it can classed as a military tactic, although a ball was kicked ahead of British troops as they charged across No Mans Land to the German Trenches, probably just to take the soldiers minds off the carnage around them and during the Christmas Truce in 1915, During a ceasefire the Germans & British ignored orders and played a football match
