Im 13 weeks and got it perscribed by the doctors at the hospital...and they know i am 13 weeks gone. Will it harm my baby if i take it? if so how? And why would i have been given it?

It should be avoided in the third trimester (6-9months).
"Codeine may be used when the benefit is considered to outweigh any risk to the foetus. Codeine is not associated with congenital abnormalities and the risks associated with its use seem to apply mainly to the last three months of pregnancy. If used in the last trimester, codeine may depress the baby's respiration and its regular use during this time may lead to withdrawal effects in the baby after birth. The effects of codeine on the woman's nervous system could also make her more prone to gastric stasis and inhalational pneumonia during labour."

I was prescribed tylenol 3 which has codeine in it for soulder/back pain while being pregnant so I would have to say if you have that it is safe to take.
But ofcourse if your dr. knew or knows you are pregnant and prescribed something for you I would only have to say it is safe. I doubt it very much that a dr. would know you are pregnant and then prescribe something harmful to you or the baby.

I am on pregnancy # 3 and have had to take Codeine type pain pills throughout all my pregnancies. I asked my doctor about this and they told me that it is safe for the baby, they just try to keep it quiet. They don't want people to know about because people will abuse it then.

I took codine when I was pregnant. It was on accident (my mom was tipsy and forgot I was 10 weeks in.) and it did nothing to my baby. I wouldn't suggest taking it constantly as it might harm the baby. I think different pills will do different things, but all pills are harmful in someway to your body let alone a baby inside of you. Some doctors are idiots. Sorry.

I was prescribed codeine with all my preg (21 weeks with 3rd child) and they turned out fine> Ive talk to several doctors about it and they all said it was fine, just to be careful not to get constipated.

As strange as it sounds I have been told by several ob/gyn's and nurse midwives that narcotics are one of the SAFEST prescriptions to be on while pregnant. Obviously you want to use them only when absolutely needed, but for migraines during pregnancy I've been on tylenol #3, percocet, & vikodin. My son turned out perfectly fine and my second seems to be right on track. They won't give it to you unless they feel you absolutely need it, since being pregnant you don't want to be on any more medication than you need. If you're that worried though, call your ob/gyn and run it by them. Good luck.

I take tylenol with codeine for chronic migraines during my pregnancy. My doctor told me its one of the most prescribed painkillers during pregnancy, myself and my baby have been fine. If you trust your doctor then you should work with him to make a care plan.

Codeine is what is known as an opioid analgesic (related to morphine) and should not be used routinely in pregnancy, unless benefits to you and baby outweigh the risks.
It should be esp. avoided in the last trimester because it might compromise the baby's respiration and using it regularly can cause your baby to have "withdrawal" syptoms after birth.
