About naming a child a perfectly normal name, but giving it an alternate spelling?
Like for instance: Kortney, Jaysen, Billi, Georg, Mikkal, Jamee, etc...

Does it serve to set them apart from others, or just to confuse everyone?

Well, usually parents don't want to have a name that is too common. By using an unusual spelling, it makes less common. It is often done when you like a particular name that is extremely popular, and you want to be different. It may confuse some people, but it's just to set the child apart from the other kids with the same name.
I think that it's fine mostly of the time, but sometimes parents go overboard with spelling changes. I have a friend named Kourtney, and I like it. But I disagree with some. Mikkal sounds like pickle, and Georg ends up sounding like Gore-guh.
If you wants to use some spelling changes to your child's name, go ahead. Just be sure it's obvious how it is pronounced.

Well, in the instance of Billi (female) versus Billy (male) sometimes it's to note the gender of the person. I've seen several males named Kortney, but Courtney seems to be the more common female spelling. I think people just want to be familiar but original all at the same time..... and most of the examples you gave are at least recognizable- some are so convoluted it is retarted (Riley, or Rylyee)

well the idea of it is to make their child stand out from the crowd, the problem is that as already mentioned it can make it harder for people to pronounce the name or say it differently to what the parents have called the child.
Many kids generally speaking do not like the name their parents gave them. But my name although it is a rather plain name not many people of my age have it and i appreciate it in my own way because it is unique. I wouldnt mind changing the spelling slightly, but what the heck I have it now, I dont really need to change it.

There is nothing original about it. Period. It's the same damn name, except an illeterate form of it. All it does, for the most part, is make the parents look silly and immature and make the kids life a little harder.
I thought messing up the spelling of names was a phase kids went through. I outgrew it at like 12, so really I don't know what those parents are thinking.

May be the 'alternate' spelling is normal and what people consider 'alternate' should be the original spelling. In the end, our names give us an identity and we give our names a personality! It all depends on how we conduct our lives.

Yes its funny they are ruining things for their kids.
My sister Holly changed it to Hollie. If my mom did this first then to be a rebel she would have to go back to Holly or I guess go up to Holleigh.
Let kids play with the name later.
My grandmother, Alyce, was born Alice and changed it as teenager to look "cooler" that was probably in 1925. So I think it goes way back that kids want to mess with their own names!

I don't think that's a very good idea, cause all it does it confuse everybody, and nobody will be able to spell your child's name right. And I don't think you want to make it extra hard for them in Kindergarten.

I'm with you. The poor kid is going to have to spell his name for EVERYONE. Why would you do that to a kid?
