XP needs a large amount of RAM just to run itself

That sounds about right. Windows XP alone takes up about 100-120mb of ram just to run. Add to that any other processes and you get to 50% of 382 pretty fast.

At today's satandards 382 mb is nothing, you need at least 512 to make a dent and 1 Gb to make a serious difference

First off, like everyone else has already said, you need more ram. 512 isn't that expensive (its about 45 bucks). Secondly, you need make sure the ram that you get is compatible with your motherboard. If you get ram that is faster than your motherboard is capable of then it will run at a slower speed (the speed the motherboard is capable of).

I just had the same problem,my ram was running low,and someone on yahoo answers said to right click my computer, then go to advanced tab and click on performance settings, then click on advanced tab again, then where it say virtual memory click change, and set it higher. That should make your computer go a lot faster.

Xp needs that much RAM just to run. You need to upgrade your RAM badly to at least 1 gig. Ram is very cheap just goto http://www.kingston.com and put in your computer model number and i'll tell you what options you have.
