now days they just call them go fast stripes but the first racing stripes were applied to high-performance prototype automobiles built as racecars by Briggs Cunningham and his motorsport team, beginning in 1951. Cunningham racecars usually carried two parallel blue stripes running from front to rear of the white body so that spectators could identify the team's automobiles readily during races. The Cunningham tradition was followed by Carroll Shelby on his Cobra and some prototypes built as, "Shelby", that sometimes were driven on the street in New Jersey. On this car they are often called "Le Mans stripes" in accordance with the intention of that car to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The tradition was soon adopted by other racing teams in many venues.

RE:
Why do they put racing stripes on civilian cars when real racing cars have no stripes?
Real racing cars have advertisements, not stripes. So why do they call colored stripes on civilian cars racing stripes?

Because racing cars had them in the 50's, 60's and early 70's before sponsorship was big business.

In the old days, racing cars had racing stripes. Most cars that come with them today are "retro" cars like Minis and Mustangs that harken to the days of racing cars with racing stripes.... you must be a young one....

It goes back to the early days of racing. It is a vintage tribute to the early cars because they did don the racing stripes back then.
