Okay, we have uped the car seat law to be 80 lbs and 8 years old now and we have the seat belt law where now you can get pulled over for it. But....

On saturday, I was driving down the road and saw a guy on a motorcycle with a thin child about 7 years old, she was waving with one hand and holding on with the other. (no she wasn't in a parade) they both had helments on.

With all these carseat laws, how can they allow a child ride on the back of a motorcylce where there is no seatbelt or child seat.

Now, I am not downing motorcylist. my point on this is how can they have such strict laws for a vehicle where your enclosed, as opposed to the letting a child on a motorcycle where they are completely exposed.

Let's face it: laws DON'T MAKE SENSE. They are bought and paid for by special interest groups. (Did you ever put money into a C.D.? They tell you that if you ever take your money out before the end of the term, you must pay a penalty? If you ask why, they will tell you that Congress passed the law calling for the penalty. Yes, Congress did pass such a law, but it was the banks, credit unions and S & L's that paid Congress to pay such a law.)
IF, IF safety was the issue, motorcycles would NOT be allowed on any highway because there is no enclosure to protect the rider. Add to that that most of those riding motorcycles do so recklessly (ever see them tailgating, weaving in and out of traffic, starting fast, and riding side-by-side?) A high performance motorcycle can reach speeds of more than 140 mph in 4 seconds. My car would not be able to get out of first gear in 4 seconds. A Mecedes, BMW or other high performance car can't even get up to 60 mph in that amount of time. With a skilled rider, a motorcycle can come to a complete stop in about one fifth the distance of a car, which can come to a stop much quicker than a pick up or van, let alone a truck.
Yes, they are so strict about a child riding in a car, but that is also because a car is easy to catch. Let's face it, for most places, tickets are the No. 1 source of revenue. You know they are not interested in safety: if they did, they would stop drunk drivers (they do in Germany), they would ticket the people who run through stop signs, run red lights, try to force people off the roads, drive fast to pass you then slam on their breaks, etc.
By the way, here in Wyoming there is no law to even wear a helmet!

I ride a motorcycle, but I refuse to give rides on my motorcycle; not because I think I am an unsafe rider, but because of the other drivers on the road, I do not wish to gamble with any ones safety but my own. I have seen kids on motorcycles with adults, the really young ones were always in front of the rider, not behind. I know in my particular part of the country, no laws exist for children on motorcycles. Do we need them..? I don't think so, I have heard of more children hurt falling out of the back of pick-up trucks and not belted in a car, and I have never heard of a child hurt while riding a motorcycle with an adult.

good point. I guess lawmakers are just turning a blind eye to motorcyclists, since we're the minority. When I have kids though, I would definetly want them to ride behind me and my husband. It's a fun experience for kids and as long as you teach them how to behave(that little girl shouldn't have been waving her arm around), you lower the chance of an accident. But you have a very valid question and I wonder if anything will ever be done about that.

Sounds like sour grapes to me. Just because you have to have a car seat, why shouldn't kids be on motorcycles. You even said helmets were worn.

We need a law which prevents any child from even riding on the back of a motorcyle. I have been on that seat, and you are dead or badly enjured in case of an accident.
