The problem is that it didn't really. Keep in mind that this was unlike any other war. In WW II and even in Korea, we faced enemies who fought fairly conventional wars in terms of maneuver, etc. The North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong learned, against the French, that guerrilla tactics were much more effective when facing a force that had the advantage in weaponry, etc. Sort of like what the colonial Americans learned fighting against the British in the Revolution. Hmm.

If you mean political lessons- then JFK acted on the lesson learned in WW2 - that tyranny has to be opposed or else the death toll is enormous. Which came true, after the Dem controlled Congress forced the defeat of South Vietnam.

If you mean military lessons, then I'm afraid the US Generals and politicians seem to have missed each and every lesson from the previous wars- the lesson that the only sensible outcome of a war is unconditional surrender (as in WW2) because anything else is only a temporary ceasefire (as shown in WW1)
