"The Middle East looked nice and cozy for a while. Everything looked fine on the surface, but beneath the surface, there was a lot of resentment, there was a lot of frustration, such that 19 kids got on airplanes and killed 3,000 Americans. It's in the long-term interest of this country to address the root causes of these extremists and radicals..."
ADDRESS THE ROOT CAUSES? Is he insane?
We don't care what they think about us. They hate us and we have to kill them. Why is Bush going soft on terror?

Good show, Doowah.
Here's a link:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/05/20070524.html
About halfway down you can see the quote. Of course, the White House website has a liberal slant, but I couldn't find this press conference on FOX News, so I don't know if this site is credible enough for you.
(Psssst . . .I sometimes hold the link for a while, and then spring it on the non-believers. . . just for fun.)
I am SUCH a b@stard, aren't I?

I cannot follow this type of questions.
As per Henry Kissinger USA has been insulted by these kids
so their henchmen should be severely treated.
Sadam was a tyrant,Bush wanted to have a control over the
oil reserve. So Bush and the American administration
invented these terrorists to take on Sadam. They thought
because Sadam was a tyrant people of Iraq will come with
open arms to invite the Us troops. With unnecessary heavy
bombing of the country and banning the militia of the country
Bush allowed a vast number of military trained people
to fight the occupied forces.Bush counted for Shia support.
These Shias are politically and religiously controlled by
Iran which is sworn enemy of the US for a long time.
Now if USA wants to go hard on terror then Iran,Syria,
Lebanon,Palestine,Israel will get involved in this war.
With conventional weapons USA will not be in a superior
position and all the 1,40,000 US soldiers may be killed.
World opinion is against the use of nukes There may
be regime changes in Saudi Arabia,Egypt,Pakistan and
Afghanistan as they are not representative government.
The main purpose of controlling the oil reserve will be lost in the way.

Actually he is not caving in to it.. (i.e. the whole surge in Iraq)
I do however find "Bush invented" answer quite comical.
"He's caving in to politics, just like EVERY politician does.
Nice to see he isn't exceptional. Not that I didn't already know that."
This just shows the true colors of the libs... They can't stand it when someone stands for what they believe in even though they are being pressured for it. This person is actually happy that they think he is caving and that he is "not exceptional", as if this has been the threat all along... They know he is exceptional and they breath the sigh of relief every time they think he is losing credibility. Just think if the libs weren't such spiteful power hungry socialists what could have been accomplished with a strong leader.... I will say this though... Bush does need to take the little "PC" gloves off and go to battle... there and on the border.

Well, he said it there himself. We need to find what is causing the hatred of U.S. in the Middle East.
It's really easy to justify killing them if they hate us becuase we are free, but is that the beginning and end of it? No. Talk to Muslims. Even listen to what Osama bin Laden has said. They all make it clear that they do not hate the American population, they hate it's government for it's foreign policies in the region... especially it's support of Isreal. From where they sit, we came in in 1948, and kicked out Palestinians to make room for a bunch of European Jews just because they said "God wanted them to have the land." According to the Muslims, they also have been promised the land. The U.S. didn't consult with them, so they feel discriminated against.
Even our "friends" of the Saudi royal family have said that peace in the Middle East can only be achieved after first adressing the Islreali agression issue.
If Bush were to adress this, he may have to admit that the U.S. might have been wrong in its actions... which he is so very obviously against ever doing. "Mission Accomplished"
Don't you find it odd that Bush calls it the "great ideological struggle," but then tries to fight it militarily? I thought military action was force, not ideology. Maybe I'm confused, is the miliary's goal in Iraq to kill the terrorists, or convert them?

The truth is that terrorist have been around for over a hundred years or so. They are pushing one political idea or another, wanting prisonors relaesed in another foriegn country or an international spotlight shined on a preceived problem. Killing people, blowing up planes, sluaghtering the Israeli Olympic team or flying planes into buildings, this is their method of voicing disatisfaction with some other element of society or another country.
The middle east is a proud civilization that has endured thousands of years of strife, but also has developed and expanded upon the basics of scientific method, mathmatics and language. However, since the embracing of Islam, the Middle East has remained almost stagnet in growth, technology and education. Muhammed preached shutting out outside influences and concentrate oon studying the Koran, and teaching it to others. This self imposed form of isolation resulted in the rest of the world passing it by in terms of technology.
The proud people are upset by what they see as extravagent lifestyles being lived by the Western world and they are bitter. They know for the most part (except the ultra rich) their standard of living is centuries behind the time. After some research on my part, I believe they hate America because it replaced the entire Middle east as the innovator of technology and living standards.
Many articles I have read and programming watched / listened to (from NPR to FOX) a resounding common theme resonating among the average person interveiwed on the street is that America should boost their standard of living to at least be equalent to ours. The abusurdity of this wealth grab seems to be a stark contrast to what the media portrays the middle east to be. Clerics consistantly (even when aid is given) bash America with hate speach and incendiary rhetoric that motivates hostility towards the U.S.. Unlike the U.S., schooling isn't picked up by the tax payers, nope, over their it's usually done by an Islamic Mosque / school with the only book read being the Koran.
Gitmo soldiers have reported that some 40% of the detainees can't read. That means, they are fed information from Clerics. The only connection most of these people have to the outside world is skewed through the prisim of the Cleric relaying the message. It's like, "I'll tell you what you need to know, just believe everything I say, I am a Cleric and Muhammed would want it this way." This is the root of extremists and radicals.
During operation friendship building (to win the hearts and minds), the U.S. troops handed out radio's (among stuffed toys, soccer balls ect.) to towns people in an attempt to pull them kicking and screaming into the future. The few that have access to the internet totally / wholly believe that everyword on it is true with no bias. God help us should they ever read Yahoo answers. The radio thing was an attempt to encourage people to have more than one source of news, instead of relying on a Cleric who may be seeing his power hold over his local people being eroded.
Concerning other posted answers:
Being in Iraq for the oil doesn't hold water. One, U.S. still buys its oil from Iraqi producers at the same rate sold internationally. The proceeds are then invested back into Iraq for modernization and infra structure building.
Two, Venazuala is in our backyard. That coountry is soo unstable, just the sight of a U.S. war ship off its coast would destablize the entire country, then an puppet regime could be put in its place instead of the nonsence going on there now. With all the attempted coups, bribery and corruption, a guy with a case full of U.S. dollars could probably bribe his way into office via a non violent coup. Then just sell it to the U.S. at lower rates. Or in exchange for installing a puppet dictator. Why deal with Chavez and his crazy tyrates /rhetoric?
Why send troops and war ships half way around the world, sacraficing soldiers for oil if its already in your backyard?
three, if we did it for the oil, why are we paying the same international prices everyone else is? Wouldn't we just get it for free? The U.S. runs the country.

Ron Paul said something very similar and was shouted down for it by Rudy Guiliani and Sean Hannity with the help of Fox News.
The GOP MUST keep the war going to feed the Military Industrial Complex and keep companies like Halliburton rich and powerful.
99% of Americans are truly clueless about what is going on in our country.

Bush ordered the invasion of two sovereign countries without provocation - that is a violation of international law. The deaths of thousands of Iraqi innocents as a direct result of that invasion are on his head.
