A pocketbook could be two things.

First, a type of coin purse, that women used to carry around over 500 years ago. It opened like a book and was small enough to fit in the pocketbook.

The second is a check book. Obviously opening like a book and men carried them around in their pockets. The rich men that is.

Because they name everything that looks like a book, a book and because it is not a book, they put a word in front of that to make it sound fancy.
