Okay, so, I'm writing a story about a person who is basically a master at escaping from custody. The timeline is 1800, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about how she could escape with hands bound with chains, and with the chains bound to the wall or floor.

Thanks!

Okay, so you're NOT seeking "magic" with trick chains or handcuffs. Some quick research shows that handcuffs come into existence around 1850 (http://www.handcuffs.org/gallery/index.html) There ARE ways of escaping from handcuffs:

1) squeezing your hands out
2) lock picking
3) releasing the pawl with a shim

Chains attached to a wall or floor would be difficult to detach... time consuming, noisy, and requiring tools !

The link below includes an "escapist's" techniques.. good luck with your story
