Yeah, good question. I know he cites George MacDonald (earlier author) as a forming influence (perhaps spiritually and literarily).

He claimed he "envisioned" a fawn with an umbrella as the impetus for the L, W &W, which, as you well know, became a seven book serries.

I believe it was stories that were being told to a godchild. I think that's what I read at the beginning of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
