You will need to start by applying for services with the local office of HUD (check in phone book for Housing Authorities). You should also be setting up a case with the Social Services agency for Medicaid, food stamps, TANF, and WIC. Typically you will meet with an intake worker and they will determine if you are elegible for any services.
Now here is the part that will likely put you off. The wait list for housing services will vary from localities, but it is not uncommon for services in large areas to have a wait list of a year or more. And before you try to tell them that you have a special need or what not, everyone on that list has a special need and is in a bad situation or they wouldn't be on the list. The agency I worked for (as public housing mngr) took applications one day a year-on that day we got 400-500 apps! And some folks were on the list for 2 years before getting help. This is a long process and the sooner you start the better off you are but do be prepared for a wait.

Try Family Services and HUD. If you don't have a place to live, there are lots of programs that can help but you are going to have to do some legwork first. Family Services is usually the best jumping off point. Good luck.

Good luck. I was trying to get low-income housing and I'm disabled. 4 years and the only place they could find me required having your own vehicle (at the time, my disability was so bad I couldn't walk well, much less drive).
