My neighbours keep danios and guppies and they have survived in a cold water tank (un-heated) for at least a year.

Generally no. Even though guppies and danio are considered tropical and sub tropical fishes they will do quite well in a huge range of temperatures. Unless allowed to drop below the mid 60's but species will do fine in an unheated tank. Your neighbor does run the increased chance of having the fish come down with penduncle disease or ich if it's introduced in the tank as both of these diseaseas do well in lower temperatures.

Depends on how warm your water is without the heater. I have a tank with guppies and it didn't have a heater because the water satayed around 76 degrees. If your water is that warm without the heater then you're fine. If it gets colder than that I would have a heater.

Yes, both danios and guppies are hardy . .. and if the ambient temperature doesn't get too cold they should do fine. But heaters are relatively cheap. Why not be safe?

yes guppies are genuine tropicals and if you allow the water to be to cool they will probably get white spot which is fatal if not treated. it is also very catching and is the aquarists best friend, it helps him to keep selling more guppies.if kept in warm water with a breeding box they will become prolific providing you have sufficient surface plants and do not have large fish in your tank(especially cyclids)

Depends what the room temeperature was - tropical fish 'do' need to be kept within a certain criteria of heat, but as a minimum, 23 celcius would be the lowest. During summer, hotter days, I turn mine down to 24.

Not really, guppies are pretty hardy. As long you don't let it get too cold in the house, they can handle that. A heater is a good idea though, it can't hurt to get one. It's a good thing to have just in case they do need it on colder days.

No, don't need a heater. Guppies and danios can handle a variety of water temps from about 66F-82F.

Here's some links that say so as well, since everyone seems to think otherwise:

And danios:

Yes these fish do need a heater because they are tropical and not cold water.
