As with any minority group, such as women, rights have had to be fought for. I will say the most passionate controversy in recent times is the abortion issue. Abortion is a cause that the politicians can "safely" take on. The birth control issue is really a non-issue any more. There are many over-the-counter methods available to anyone who wants to use them. However, a lot of people don't know that birth control and even medical education about it was prohibited by law until around 1935 when Margaret Sanger, nurse and mid-wife, got tired of seeing women dying in childbirth and leaving her other children motherless and broke the law to educate women how to use natural birth control. She even went to jail over it! Seems odd today, as most young women take it for granted that they are taught about how their bodies function and birth control is available even without parental consent.

As the fair treatment in the workplace, I still think women have a lot farther to go to achieve equality. We may be able to hold jobs that were once available to only men, but our pay checks still do not reflect equal pay for equal work.

Remember the Suffragettes!
