Briefly, the Louisiana territory had once belonged to France. The acquisition of this territory significantly extended the land by 530 million acres(5 cents per acre). Thomas Jefferson was hesitant to purchase this abundant amount of land- solemnly believing that the purchase would contradict his "philosophical consistencies" with the constitution, but American negotiators were willing to purchase it, eventually spending 5 million more than intended(15million) in 1803. The Louisiana purchase treaty was signed on April 30th 1803, formally announced by Jefferson to the American people in July of that year.
