scandisk will check for bad sectors and with fix it if its possible or mark it as unusable. Another thing you can try is most hdd manufacturers have tools you can download that will scan the hard drive and will return an error code if there is an issue with it.

You can check it by right-click on teh C: drive, properties, Tools, Disk error check , tick both boxes, it should ask to restart and do a full scan.
You cant remove bad sectors, these are physical defects, like chips in a mirror, Windows can marked these as unusable during the above scan but thats all it can do.

You can try and reformat it, but if it's a bad sector, it usually means there's some damage to the actual disc. It's a good idea to get all the data off of it, if you can. You'll need a new HD

There is a software available for the purpose - Hard Drive Inspector. It will tell you the condition of your hard disk and warn you if it's really bad. However, the software is not free. Try searching it in Google if you want to buy it.
